Body Slam Brigade Number 55:

AEW’s New Deal

Starting this August, All Elite Wrestling original programming will broadcast every weeknight except Thursday.AEW and Warner Media released statements on Tuesday announcing that the AEW’s Flagship show Dynamite moves from TNT to TBS in 2022 and a second weekly show titled Rampage launches on August 13th on TNT.

Friday Night’s Rampage show joins AEW’s existing line-up of Dark Elevation (Monday), Dark (Tuesday), and Dynamite (Wednesday).

In addition, AEW and Warner announced that TNT will debut “four new professional wrestling specials annually.”

Rampage

The launch of Rampage reminds me of past attempts by wrestling companies to launch a “second” show.

While WWE’s Smackdown survived and by some metrics has actually surpassed Monday Night Raw as the company’s number one show, Smackdown is an exception to the rule.

As successful as WWE has been with Smackdown, they haven’t exactly been able to replicate that success with any other addition to their lineup. NXT has been the most successful weekly wrestling show that WWE has launched since Smackdown, but you can count on your hands the number of times that NXT has attracted even half of the core WWE audience watching Raw and Smackdown each week.

The WCW Thunder show started strong, but ultimately began to slip. Thunder went from a live show, to a sometimes live and sometimes taped show, to a fully taped show, to a show that was taped directly after the Nitro broadcast went off the air.

It should be noted in the case of WCW Thunder, Eric Bischoff has said that TBS did not want to pay for the additional cost of producing the show.

In the case of Rampage, Tony Khan has explained that the new television deal (that includes Rampage) provides AEW with financial upside that they can invest in growing AEW. Mike Johnson from PW Insider later reported that the word going around is that the new restructured television deal resulted in a total value of around 8 figures. That’s consistent with WWE’s four year deals for each of their Smackdown, Raw, and Peacock deals.

But still . . . What must AEW do to make Rampage special?

What can AEW do to get people to tune into TBS at 10PM on a Friday night in the middle of the Summer?

My Opinion

Rampage must be a second show for the simple reason that Dynamite came first, but it must NOT be second rate.

  • Khan and his team need to make Rampage must watch television by infusing the company’s main storylines into this new Friday Night broadcast.
  • All of the effort that AEW puts toward Dynamite creative must be equaled for this new show. It shouldn’t be abnormal for Rampage to feature big stipulation matches, celebrity appearances, and title defenses.
  • Do not make Dark for television. If wrestling fans view the show as non-competitive and overly predictable, I don’t believe they’ll tune in.

It won’t always be easy for AEW to adhere to these fairly obvious bullet points. If Dynamite ratings slip, it’s too easy to focus all energy (at the expense of Rampage) toward solving that problem.

Relaxing Now
I’ve said my peace above, and it’s now time to relax.

AEW has given me no reason to believe that they won’t make Rampage an exceptional show.

Imagine what could happen if AEW more fully tapped into the creative genius of Matt Hardy, Darby Allin, and Chris Jericho.

The show has high potential for success, but don’t expect it to pull in a million viewers in the first week.

Despite all my reservations above, I’m fairly convinced that Rampage will be a great show. My next question . . . will WWE react? Will WWE counter program with something other than 205 Live? We’ll see.

Have a Great Weekend!

Ryan Joy
