My Time at WrestleMania

Fans and journalists often criticize WWE’s short term booking and scripted promos, but nobody can deny WWE’s ability to put on a spectacular show. WrestleMania 37 was spectacular!

Arriving in Tampa, you would have been hard pressed to find a surface that wasn’t plastered with the face of one of the many WWE superstars performing at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The faces of Sasha Banks, Rhea Ripley, Roman Reigns and countless others were everywhere you looked.

Whether you’re a wrestling fan or not, those banners guaranteed that you could not exist within Tampa without knowing about the massive event that was about to rain down on the city. While wrestling fans anticipated the ability to chant, cheer, and boo for the first time in over a year, Mother Nature was determined to have her say.

The greatest event in entertainment would start with a rain delay. WWE has dealt with all kinds of drama like fans knowing about Goldberg and Brock leaving the company to threats on the life of Sergeant Slaughter to just last year when the pandemic caused WrestleMania to be held on a closed set.

Despite all the crazy issues WWE has encountered over the years, WrestleMania has never teetered on the edge of cancellation due to weather.

In storyline, Vince McMahon teamed with his son Shane to defeat Shawn Michaels and God at Backlash 2006 (I’m sure you cringed reading that just as much as I cringed writing it), and apparently God wasn’t quite done with this rivalry. The showdown between Vince and Mother Nature only lasted a short time as Night 1 kicked off 30 minutes later than planned. Let the record book show that the opening contest of Night 1 was in fact WWE versus Mother Nature.
Mother Nature brought thunder and lightning to what the social media meme artists dubbed “WrestleRainia” and WWE spared no expense with pyro, lasers, and special effects once WrestleMania got underway.

There is so much great wrestling content available these days that I can’t honestly say that WWE programming is my favorite each week. That said, this event was full of the moments that create goosebumps, inspire joy, force you to scratch your head, and even a few that make your skin burn with fury. I don’t know about you, but that’s the combination of things that I want from all entertainment.

It also speaks to the diversity of WWE’s audience that the same moments that inspired joy for some caused others to scratch their head or even become angry. See Sasha Banks v. Bianca Belair and The Fiend Bray Wyatt v. Randy Orton for two examples.

No matter how spectacular the event, no matter how many external forces (Covid-19, government regulation, public relations, and weather) need to be overcome, and no matter how much joy a moment can bring to some . . . not everyone will be happy. That’s how life works.

From my point of view (which was 100 level seating about midway between the ramp and the ring), the event was a magical production. I’m so grateful to have been able to attend the event, and I can’t wait for the next one.

Have a Great Weekend!

Ryan Joy

WWE Releases 10 Members of the Main Roster

On Thursday 4/15, WWE announced the release of Samoa Joe, Bo Dallas, Mojo Rawley, Mickie James, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Chelsea Green, Kalisto, Tucker, and Wesley Blake.

The news comes on the one year anniversary of WWE’s massive 2020 lay off that included over 30 named talent and countless others working in developmental and backstage or office roles.

WWE took sharp criticism from media and fans in 2020 for such a massive lay off at the beginning of a pandemic. Most people seemed to believe that the released wrestlers would have a hard time finding work at a time when a lot of wrestling companies were shutting down.

That does not appear to be the case as many of those released in 2020 went on to success in other companies or on the independents.

While the 2020 class of releases appears to have landed on their feet, the 2021 news is still somewhat hard to stomach as WWE reported record earnings in 2020 and the new Peacock deal will almost guarantee another record year in 2021. They didn’t have to get rid of anyone.

When I look at the situation objectively though, every major company in the world looks to trim their highest cost and lowest performing employees and replace them with cheaper employees with great upside potential. That’s just business, and it causes turmoil in every organization.

Having said that, it does seem that WWE shot themself in the foot with many of the talents released on 4/15/21.

  • Tucker, as a member of Heavy Machinery, was one half of a very over tag team, but the company split them up. His partner, the more charismatic Otis, had a brief singles run before getting slammed back into the tag division with a different partner. It seems WWE had no plans for Tucker as he only appeared on WWE television twice afterward.
  • While nobody seriously considered Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as the best wrestlers in WWE, they were an exceptional act as a tag team. WWE again split them up with seemingly no plan for either individual.
Others on the list (Bo Dallas, Mojo Rawley, Wesley Blake, Chelsea Green) were given a very brief window or no time at all to get anything going.

Kalisto and Mickie James are head scratchers for sure. Mickie is a legend of women’s wrestling, and Kalisto is exceptional at a style that WWE doesn’t often promote.

That leaves Samoa Joe. One of the very best wrestlers and talkers in the world. He has been somewhat prone to injury lately, but he has been consistently the best member of the commentary team. I can only assume that a cost-benefit analysis was done, and they decided to part ways. I have no doubts that Joe will do well wherever he lands.

While this is horrible news for any individual involved, it helps to look at the glass being half full. Many of those released are very well connected with spouses and friends in Impact, AEW, and elsewhere. Last year’s Impact Slammiversary show was built around the fact that they would debut wrestlers from those released by WWE in 2020. Having said that, every company has to have a limit on the number of talent that they can employ. If they hire from this list, it probably means a cut somewhere else.

Circle April 15, 2022 on your calendar for next year. It does seem that is the date that WWE has targeted to make talent reductions.

Best wishes to those that were released.

Issue 50 – Exciting Updates to the Body Slam Brigade Newsletter!

WOW!

This is the 50th issues of the Body Slam Brigade Newsletter. In the beginning, I learned from your feedback and from experimentation. That lead to some early modifications. If you’ve been with me since day one, you’ve seen a multitude of formatting changes.

To mark the 50th issue, I’m changing things up once again! First and foremost, I want to offer everyone a chance to contribute to the content within the Body Slam Brigade Newsletter.

Help shape the content of the Body Slam Brigade Newsletter.

Each member of the community can submit a wrestling topic they would like to have as a featured article in the Body Slam Brigade Newsletter. Maybe you want a special profile piece on a specific wrestler or wrestling event. Whatever your request, it will be taken seriously and scheduled for a future newsletter! Just push the button below to generate an email and send me your request.

And that’s not all I’m introducing with issue 50!

Each week, I’ll send you between one and three emails.

The most important of these emails will come on Friday when I send out the official Body Slam Brigade Newsletter. Make sure you don’t miss this email with all the major news stories and results from the week. This is the email you’re used to getting every week.

One of the other two emails will be a Minutes To Bell Time product or service announcement. These emails can range from a new product release to sales and crowd funding options (like Patreon).

The final email will pertain to a premium piece of wrestling content that I absolutely don’t want you to miss. That might mean it’s a really good episode of the Daily Wrestling News Show or a fun article on the Minutes to Bell Time Website.

Jon Moxley by My Ill Gotten Brain

New Japan General News

  • Jon Moxley cut a promo, which essentially identified Yuji Nagata as his next opponent. Nagata seemingly accepted the challenge in a response video. No date for the match has been identified.
  • Toru Yano’s Next Defense of the KOPW Interim Championship will be against Evil at Wrestling Dontaku. New Japan has noted that the proposed stipulation for the match is:
    • “Now Yano has proposed a ‘Creation of Darkness Blindfold Match’. Distinct from a ‘traditional’ blindfold match, this bout will start with four blindfold hoods on each of the four ringposts around the ring. A competitor is only able to defeat their opponent if they can blindfold them first. Should a hood be secured on an opponent, usual rules apply to pinfalls, submissions, knock outs and countouts. EVIL has his own dark twist, proposing the first ever Darkness Match. In this ruleset, the first three minutes of the match will see the lights turned on and off at thirty second intervals. From the three minute mark onward, there will be thirty seconds of darkness every three minutes until a decision is rendered.”
