BSB #53 – What if Daniel Bryan Leaves WWE?

Sign up here to get this newsletter delivered to your email each week.

The Future of Daniel Bryan . . .

Daniel Bryan’s WWE contract has expired and nobody knows what Bryan will do next. Bryan’s silence on the matter makes the situation that much more intriguing.

Will he stay with WWE? Will he move on to someplace else? Will he attempt to work as a true independent by not signing a long term deal anywhere?

We have questions . . . but until Bryan makes up his mind . . . we’ll not have answers.

While we live in this short window of uncertainty, we can’t help dreaming about all the potential opponents for Daniel Bryan. Many dream matches exist outside WWE, and I wrote an article earlier this week naming my Top 5 Dream opponents for Daniel Bryan. You can find the full article by clicking here.

That list focused on wrestling names outside WWE as I named one wrestler from ROH, AEW, NWA, Impact, and New Japan in this list.

You can consider this the extended edition of that article as I know answer the question, “What if Daniel Bryan stays in WWE?”

Here are 5 Dream Opponents for Daniel Bryan if He Stays in WWE.

Let me first preface the list by saying that I selected opponents that match well with Bryan’s style and that would also benefit by working a program with Daniel Bryan.

You might also find it a little odd that I’ve selected so many NXT UK wrestlers for this list.

NXT UK is the least exposed brand and therefore has some of the least exposed wrestlers. Having Daniel Bryan wrestle on the NXT UK raises the profile of the brand while also getting a new crop of excellent wrestlers a chance to step into a well deserved spotlight. WWE can also capitalize on the rich pre-WWE history between Daniel Bryan and NXT UK commentator Nigel McGuinness. Nigel may have insights previously unexplained on WWE television.

Here’s the list.

Number 5 – Kushida

I have always described Daniel Bryan as a proficient technical wrestler and striker. That’s also how I would describe Kushida. The Timesplitter brings a bit more speed and agility to his matches, and Bryan can, at times, bring more intensity.

Put these two in a match together, and I expect them to bring the house down.

Number 4 – Pete Dunne
The Bruiserweight v. The Leader of the Yes Movement.Pete Dunne established the NXT UK Championship before making the full-time switch to NXT. He’s had a successful tag team run with Matt Riddle, and he became the breakout star from Pat McAfee’s short run in NXT.Pete’s complete lack of charisma has ironically made him interesting. His offense is intense, technically sound, and his finger-lock submissions often make you turn away.Pete Dunne has been claiming to be the best technical wrestler in the world, and nobody would question Daniel Bryan for making the same claim. One big feud with Daniel Bryan, and Pete Dunne could jump to the main roster.

Number 3 – Jordan Devlin
A few years ago, Mustafa Ali made the WWE Main Roster at Daniel Bryan’s request. Ali was riding a strong wave when an injury took him down costing Ali a once in a lifetime opportunity that Kofi Kingston turned into Kofi-Mania.Daniel Bryan could do the same thing with Jordan Devlin. I see this as a multi-match program where Devlin takes a surprising first match win. Like everyone else on this list, Devlin holds all the tools to wrestle on top. He just needs a magical moment to push him there.
Number 2 – Ilja Dragunov
Ilja Dragunov is unique. As intense as anyone else in wrestling. At present, Dragunov is working through some anger management issues. Longtime fans of Daniel Bryan will know that Bryan has plenty of experience with those issues. Not only will the match be completely insane, but Daniel might bring a bit of levity to Dragunov’s current program.
Number 1 – Tyler Bate
Tyler Bate won the inaugural NXT UK Championship at the age of 19 years old. He lost the title to Pete Dunne, but has been a staple of the NXT UK brand in every moment since. Now, 24 years old, Bate remains one of the top stars in NXT UK.Everything you love about Daniel Bryan exists within Tyler Bate . . . except Bate is 15 years younger than Bryan. An upcoming NXT UK Takeover would be a whole lot more special with a Tyler Bate v. Daniel Bryan match. An appearance from Bryan would attract more eyeballs to the program, and a match with Bate almost has to be 5 Stars.

That’s My List. I’m sure you have one too. Feel free to share your favorite options. If you want to join the conversation and tell everyone about the Daniel Bryan matches that you most want to see, consider leaving a comment on this Facebook Post.Have a Great Weekend!
