A Ban on Tag Team Wrestling? Let’s Get Serious!

Newsletter #85 – A Ban on Tag Team Wrestling. Let’s Get Serious!

This is going to start a little weird, but stick with me because I’ll bring it back to wrestling in just a few seconds.

It’s the year 2022, and we live in such crazy times.

Everywhere we look, people are divided about what’s right and what’s wrong. We see serious disagreement pertaining to the U.S. Supreme Court and the pandemic alongside the silly debates like Starbucks v. Dunkin’ and Pizza Hut v. Domino’s.

Both the serious and the silly disagreements have probably caused a few Sunday dinners to end in bitterness and maybe tears.

As wrestling fans, we can’t escape the debate and disagreements. It seems that the modern wrestling fan is as divisive about their favorite wrestling company as they are about their political affiliation.

Before you say, it’s only the AEW fans that are bad* or it’s only the WWE fans that are bad*, I’ll go ahead and say it’s pretty bad* on both sides.

*Note: I used bad in those sentences as a stand-in for whatever adjective you might think applies best. I thought of too many (spiteful, obnoxious, hateful, toxic, etcetera), so I just went broad with bad.

As divisive as we all are as wrestling fans, I want to offer an aspect of wrestling where we can all find some common ground.

Try this on for size. 59 years ago, the New York State Athletic Commission enforced a ban on tag team wrestling.

That’s right!

Prior to this day (May 11th) in 1963, tag team wrestling was banned in New York State.

Hard to believe right?

How could something that’s so much a part of everything we see on TV today have been banned less than 60 years ago?

Maybe that should be a lesson for all of us when it comes to debates in wrestling.

60 years from now, we’re going to look back and say . . . that thing we thought was a really serious discussion (which wrestling company is better) should go in the silly pile of arguments alongside Dunkin’ v. Starbucks and Pizza Hut v. Domino’s.

Thanks for reading this week’s newsletter. In addition to the above letter, read on for some great wrestling resources.

Thanks,

Ryan

P.S. – I’m sure the number one response to this email will be people telling me how I mis-categorized the coffee and pizza discussion into the silly pile. I’m sorry in advance.

P.S.S. – I spoke to Florida Man TC Read on this week’s episode of CCW Insider. He uses A-ha’s Take on Me as his theme music. Great stuff. Check it out using any of the links below!
