“That dream. That goal that I had growing up never left my soul. I made mistakes and I made wrong moves and I took  wrong decisions, but I never stopped thinking that I was going to be able to make it to the top.”  – PCO

Wrestling Fans,

It took Bobby Lashley 16 years to reach the top of WWE. He’s there now!
It took the NWA a year to come back when COVID struck, but they return this month.
Jake St. Patrick has put the time in on the Independent Scene, and it’s his year.
Things never seem to happen as quickly as we want, but this week’s news shows us that good things eventually will happen when we stay focused on our goals.
PCO spoke the above quote shortly after he won the ROH World Title at the end of 2019. When reading it today, the relevancy of that quote to Bobby Lashley’s world title win struck me. Lashley didn’t have to wait as long as PCO, but he waited a long time.I guess good things take time. Let’s not waste any. On to this week’s news!

AEW Revolution

I travelled to Chicago last February to sit in the crowd and watch Jon Moxley challenge for and win the AEW World Championship. Moxley’s victory blew the roof off the building (not literally). On the undercard of that same show, Kenny Omega defended the AEW Tag Team Championships alongside his partner Adam Page. It was one of the best matches I have ever seen.

Fast forward a year, and we find ourselves preparing to watch the second iteration of AEW’s Revolution series. Jon Moxley again challenges for the AEW World Championship and Kenny Omega again defends a championship – this time the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. I won’t be sitting in the stands this year, but each AEW PPV is better than the last and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the show from the comfort of my living room.

I still want to have the shared experience of enjoying the show with other wrestling fans, so please join me for a special AEW Post Show broadcast of the Daily Wrestling News Show. Subscribe to the Minutes To Bell Time You Tube Channel and Click the Notification Bell, so you can see when we go live. The plan will be to go live roughly 15 minutes after Revolution goes off the air. You can also watch the show on-demand later.

Bobby Lashley

It doesn’t happen too often that we have the opportunity to celebrate a brand new world champion. 16 years after initially debuting for the WWE in 2005, Bobby Lashley won the WWE Championship for the first time on the 3/1 episode of Monday Night Raw. Despite the Miz’s best efforts to avoid having a legitimate match, Lashley used the Hurt Lock Submission to put an end to Miz’s 8 day reign as WWE Champion. Everyone from Lashley’s former mouthpiece Lio Rush to his former manager Lana publicly congratulated Bobby on a job well done and on a championship that came well earned.

Now we begin to speculate about the type of title reign we’ll get out of Bobby Lashley. Will Lashley carry the belt to WrestleMania where he’ll lose it back to Drew McIntyre? Does he defeat Drew McIntyre to become Raw’s new dominant player? Will there be another challenger? Does The Miz get a rematch? Does he even want one? Is Brock Lesnar an option as Lashley’s opponent?

On one hand, I see the justice in Lashley dropping the title back to Drew at WrestleMania. On the other hand, I think there is a lot of merit in having Lashley retain the championship for a longer period of time to better solidify his position as a top guy in WWE. To have staying power on top, he’ll likely need a few signature defenses against credible challengers.

However Lashley’s WrestleMania plans shake out, I’m happy to see him win the WWE Championship. I look forward to whatever set of matches we see from Lashley in the coming weeks and months.

Jake St. Patrick

I interviewed Jake St. Patrick earlier this week on the Daily Wrestling News Show. Jake is an independent wrestler well known in Florida. Originally from Chicago, Jake has wrestled several matches on AEW Dark against opponents like Brian Cage, Will Hobbs, Preston Vance, and The Butcher and The Blade. On the special Saturday edition of AEW Dark on 3/6, Jake wrestles Jack Evans.

Like many wrestlers I interview, he talks about being inspired by Shawn Michaels.

At the end of the interview, I ask Jake what’s going to be different about him in one year from now. His answer: “I’m gonna be signed somewhere.” Best wishes to Jake on achieving that goal. With his talent and attitude, I feel it only appropriate to summon the words of Paul Heyman. Jake’s proclamation that he’ll be signed by the end of 2021 “is not a prediction. . .it’s a spoiler.” Good Luck to Jake. Watch the interview by clicking on the image below.

Upcoming Interview

The next interview on the Daily Wrestling News Show will occur this Monday on 3/8. Coastal Championship Wrestling’s Nelio Cuomo Costa will come on the show to discuss their huge slate of shows coming up. Their Anniversary Show is loaded with a ladder match, hair v. hair match, cage match, and the show features all the CCW stars plus The Headbangers, Brutus Beefcake, The Sandman, Super Crazy, and more. Nelio brings a lot of great energy to the show.

I’ll also talk with Nelio about Bash at the Brew 2, which I will be attending live on 3/6. Subscribe to Minutes To Bell Time on You Tube or Follow us on Facebook to see these interviews.

A New WWE Champion

  • Bobby Lashley won the WWE Championship on March 1, 2021 in the main event segment of Monday Night Raw. The victory ended the eight day reign of The Miz.
  • At 44 years old, Lashley’s WWE Championship reign is the first in a professional wrestling career that has included multiple runs on the WWE roster over the last 16 years.
  • As the “CEO of the Hurt Business,” Lashley leads a faction that holds 3 of the 4 male championships (excluding 24/7) on the Raw brand.
  • When Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36, Bobby Lashley was Drew’s third major title defense (Big Show on WrestleMania Evening, Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank) at Backlash in June. At the time Lashley was transitioning away from his storyline with Lana to his present day affiliation with MVP and the Hurt Business.
Lashley took to Instagram to describe his feelings after his WWE Championship win:

“Sometimes you have to fight for the things that are important to you. When I made my return to WWE, I told myself I WILL be WWE Champion one day and I’m willing to fight for it. Nothing in life is certain and sometimes you can’t control the outcome of things but there were a couple things I could control. I could control the work I put in and the attitude I had while doing it. My attitude has always been positive and my drive has always been second to none. This night is easily one of the greatest night’s of my life.

I f**cking did it!! I can’t even put into words what this title means to me.

I’m still numb yet filled with so much emotion right now. I have so many people I want to thank personally and for all of you who believed in me, thank you from the bottoms of my heart. Hard work and persistence does pay off but I’m not done yet! I’m was born for this. I’m a warrior and I’m ready to stand and fight any and everyone who wants to come after this title. Now ladies and gentlemen it’s time to get back on the grind so I can make this title run legendary! I’m in ….. The Hurt Business. I am your new WWE Champion ????”

  • On 3/1, New Japan announced the second New Japan Cup USA Tournament will begin on 4/2 and run for four weeks. The winner will get a future IWGP United States Championship opportunity. • Post Match: El Desperado made his way to the ring. This Thursday is the 49th Anniversary Show. It is tradition that the Junior Champion face the Heavyweight Champion in a non-title match. The Return of the NWA on PPV and NWA POWERRR

FITE TV in conjunction with the National Wrestling Alliance issued the following statement on 3/2.

FITE, the premier global digital platform for sports and entertainment, announced today that the National Wrestling Alliance will return on March 21st at 4pm ET with a live Pay Per view event; relaunching the promotion since it went on hiatus due to the global pandemic. Following the ‘Back For The Attack’ PPV, the NWA will resume a full schedule of NWA POWERRR events on Tuesdays at 6:05pm ET beginning on March 23rd, available via a low-cost subscription bundle.

The return to PPV and regular programming will be the NWA’s first attempt at running their own programming since the start of the pandemic. The NWA did continue to operate on the margins throughout 2020:

  • A partnership with AEW consistently put the NWA Women’s World Championship on AEW PPV and AEW television.
  • David Marquez also continued to partner with the NWA through the Prime Time Live series that featured many NWA matches and all of the NWA championships.

Jim Crocket Jr. Passes away at the age of 76

  • Crocket owned several territories that he consolidated and branded as the NWA.
  • He famously bought the coveted Saturday Night time slot on WTBS from Vince McMahon and eventually created the World Championship Wrestling Television shows.
  • Crocket sold the company to Ted Turner in 1988 who gave the organization the WCW name.

Young Rock Ratings

  • Week 3 of the Young Rock series had 3.2 Million Viewers for the debut episode.
  • Week 2 had 3.4 Million viewers
