BSB #45: Peyton Royce Says “Don’t Waste My Time”

Sign up here to get this newsletter delivered to your email each week.

“I have been quiet, but closed mouths don’t get paid. I’m not here to hide my talents. In fact, my talents are hidden behind the opinions of others. Why not just let me go and see what happens? . . . Stop wasting my time and give me Asuka”  – Peyton Royce

Peyton Royce

The above is a snippet from an emotionally charged promo spoken by Peyton Royce on this week’s episode of Raw Talk. She spoke with purpose and power, and I think her words resonated with others because Peyton wasn’t afraid to show RAW emotion Based on what we know of Royce’s work and her opportunities, we can easily believe that everything she had to say was a true reflection of her feelings.

It’s also interesting to me that Peyton spoke those words on International Women’s Day. Royce talks about keeping silent, hiding her talents, and being unable to progress forward. In many ways, I could relate that to the struggles that women have faced in a world that isn’t consistently gender equal.

Now my interpretation might not be for everyone. That’s ok, but I bet all of us can relate with what it feels like to have our voices silenced or to have opportunities denied for pointless reasons. Hasn’t there been a time where you wished someone would let you go and “see what happens?”

Peyton’s promo was powerful because it was relatable and emotional. I felt her pain, I related to her frustration, and I empathize with her struggle.

I bet Peyton Royce gained more than a few supporters with that promo. After all that, how can you not be in her corner?

Nelio Cuomo Costa

I love chatting with Nelio who leads the efforts for South Florida’s Regional Promotion Coastal Championships Wrestling. He’s helped coordinate a number of special guests on the Daily Wrestling News Show in addition to appearing himself on three occasions. The latest of those discussions was Monday 3/8, and we talked about a ton of great CCW events, talents, and news.

CCW has an amazing lineup of shows next week that include ECW legends CW Anderson, The Sandman, and Supercrazy. Their anniversary show on 3/20 includes a ladder match, cage match, hair v. hair match, an appearance by Brutus Beefcake, and a tag team title match with the Headbangers.

The link to my interview with Nelio is below.

Next Week

I’m going to be away next week, so you won’t be getting a traditional Body Slam Brigade Newsletter. I recommend subscribing to the Minutes To Bell Time You Tube Channel and listening to our five WrestleMania Specials (one each day Monday – Friday). I think you’ll love them because we loved creating them. Watching those will more than make up for not having an issue next week. I’ll remind you again next week, but here’s the link to the Minutes To Bell Time You Tube Channel.

Have a Great Weekend!

News and Analysis from AEW Revolution

  • All Elite Wrestling (AEW) held Revolution, their first major PPV event of the year, on 3/7 from Jacksonville. The show was full of surprises (not all of them great). If you would like to hear my immediate thoughts on AEW Revolution, I inserted a link to my AEW Revolution Post Show directly below this block.
  • Christian Cage Signs with AEW:
    • Under normal circumstances, the signing of Christian Cage would have been an enormous news story. AEW’s own hype of a major star signing with the company left some fans and critics underwhelmed when AEW revealed the star to be Christian. People were hoping to see Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, or John Cena. Christian is not considered to be on the same level as those talents, which is what led to a feeling of disappointment.
    • Given that AEW is not yet the financial powerhouse that WWE has become, it probably does not make sense for them to sign big money contracts with people like Brock Lesnar that would work very few dates at a very high price. That’s especially true when someone like Christian can be closer to full-time.
    • All of this is not to say that Christian won’t be great. He returned to life as an active competitor in January after a long absence, and he was well received by the fans. Christian looks to be in great condition, and he could always wrestle as good as anyone.
    • AEW’s hype of Christian as a Hall of Fame quality talent seems, at least to me, to be a nod to the fact that Christian has long been left out of the WWE’s Hall of Fame despite many of his peers already getting acknowledged.
    • The fact that Christian appeared in WWE’s Royal Rumble does make this talent acquisition feel like a steal, which is the most exciting part of the story. Talent will certainly benefit if WWE and AEW get in any sort of talent war.
  • Ethan Page Signs with AEW:
    • Ethan Page finished with Impact in 2020, and his departure was well documented.
    • While Page’s arrival in AEW was not a surprise, it seems that most AEW fans are ready to welcome him.
    • Given the existing relationship that AEW has with Impact Wrestling, this signing also loses a bit of its luster.
  • Maki Itoh Appears on the Buy In:
    • Itoh captured the hearts and minds of anyone that saw her perform in the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament.
    • Where Itoh lacks in ring-experience, she more than makes up for in over the top charisma. She’s fun to watch and a ball of energy.
    • What she says out loud and writes on Twitter is typically colorful. People like that.
  • The Exploding Barbed Wire Match Disappointment:
    • Given the quality of work performed by Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley along with the storyline that included an apparent face turn by Eddie Kingston, it’s unfortunate that most will look upon the Exploding Barbed Wire Match with disappointment.
    • In the closing moments of the show, the ring was meant to explode. Eddie Kingston rushed to the ring and when it became obvious that he wouldn’t be able to usher Moxley to safety, Kingston instead draped his own body over Moxley in an effort to shield Moxley from the explosion.
    • Kingston is a hero despite the fact that the eventual explosion was little more than a few sparklers amidst boos and laugher from the crowd. Some part of the explosion obviously didn’t happen according to plan. While the match exceeded expectations and the Kingston storyline made for a compelling path forward, most people will simply remember the dud of an explosion.
  • Sting and Darby Prevail in a Cinematic Street Fight
    • This was one of the major highlights of the show. When I spoke to Nelio Cuomo Costa (a wrestling promoter for CCW in Florida) on the Daily Wrestling News Show, he stated that this could have gone on last.
    • I agree. Obviously nobody could have predicted the mishap that occurred with the Barbed Wire Match, but the return of Sting – a bon-a-fide wrestling legend – in a match where he looked fantastic was a big deal.
    • The tone and production value was second to none and masterfully done. It was also the first match announced for Revolution with a build that stems from an argument between Darby Allin and Taz from a year ago.
  • AEW Revolution Results from 3/7
    • Britt Baker and Maki Itoh defeat Thunder Rosa and Riho – 14:50
    • Young Bucks defeat MJF and Chris Jericho (c) – AEW World Tag Team Championship – 17:49
    • Pac and Fenix wins the Casino Tag Team Royale – 26:47
    • Hikaru Shida defeats Ryo Mizunami – 15:10
    • Miro and Kip Sabian defeat Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy – 07:53
    • Adam Page defeats Matt Hardy – 14:57
    • Scorpio Sky wins the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match – 23:15
    • Darby Allin and Sting defeat Brian Cage and Ricky Starks – 13:48
    • Kenny Omega defeats Jon Moxley – Exploding Barbed Wire Match – 25:08

Major News and Analysis from AEW Dynamite on 3/10

  • Based on an angle from Dynamite, Christian Cage has been positioned as the next challenger for Kenny Omega’s AEW World Championship
  • Eddie Kingston explained that he had an anxiety attack on AEW Revolution, which is why he needed medical attention after the bomb was a dud.
  • TNT had a major audio issue during the Lee Johnson and Ethan Page Match. You could obviously hear a second audio feed from an NBA Basketball game. AEW made the Johnson-Page match available for streaming.
  • I may be wrong, but I think the announced Thunder Rosa v. Britt Baker main event on 3/17 will be the first time women headline an AEW television broadcast.
  • The Original Inner Circle reformed with the inclusion of Sammy Guevara at the end of Dynamite. Santana, Ortiz, Jericho, Hager, and Guevara removed MJF from the Inner Circle. To their surprise, MJF built a faction of his own. Before the Inner Circle could get to MJF, the lights went out. When the lights came back, Wardlow, Tully Blanchard, FTR, and Shawn Spears attacked the Inner Circle. Wardlow powerbombed Jericho off the stage to close Dynamite.
