Andre the Giant Passed Away 29 Years Ago Today

On this day (January 27th) in 1993, Andre the Giant passed away in Paris, France. He was in town for his father’s funeral.

Modern fans know Andre through his legendary status in WWE history.

Andre competed in the main event of WrestleMania III – a landmark event for the the World Wrestling Federation – drawing over 90,000 fans to see the Giant challenge Hulk Hogan for the World Wrestling Federation Championship. The match has been referred to as a passing of the torch moment.

35 years later, WWE still uses footage from this match (Hogan slamming Andre) in the opening sequence to their “Then, Now, Forever, Together” video package that precedes every WWE broadcast.

When the WWE established their Hall of Fame in 1993, Andre was posthumously named as the first entrant.

WWE has also honored the memory of Andre with the “Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal” which takes place each year at WrestleMania.
